Future of the Network: Digital citizens

Rome (Italy). The Interdisciplinary Course 2017-2018 held at the Faculty Auxilium on the theme “Live and Educate in a Connected Society” has concluded. Living the Net by accompanying, self-regulating, alternating experiences, because, says Pier Cesare Rivoltella, "media education is an essential skill for edu-communicators".

Re-mediate the media

Professor Rivoltella explains that the evolution of the media should be considered as a process of re-mediation along the lines of continuity more than of a break. It identifies three "media ages" that have re-mediated technologies for knowledge, interaction, socialization.

A first phase is that of the so-called "mainstream media", media-tools, understood as the enhancement and extension of human perceptions. In this case, technologies are "technologies of distance" to be shortened and which, going beyond the sense of place, release communication from the dimensions of space and time. «Today - he specifies - with the Internet everything arrives without us leaving».

The second phase of the "media-environment" is characterized by collaboration and cooperation, a progressive occupation of the physical environment, a "screen" that surrounds the everyday experience of each of us, with a promise that, thanks to online environments, "You can do what you want, when you want, where you want". What is to be configured as a consequence is a "group technology", which allows sharing and cooperation, collective writing and participatory culture.

A third moment is the media-connective tissue, where the media are wearable, now grafted into everyday life. Experiences like Big Data, digital welfare, web intelligence, digital physical tell us how the connection is now the social synapses, i.e. the media put people in relationship. It is the current post-media condition, where the media become transparent, lose their opacity, and migrate in our lives. A dimension of inter-reality, overcoming real / virtual antagonism; the emergence of "community technology" where digital media helps to rebuild the social fabric of the community, stimulating aggregation rather than disintegration; the augmented experience where, as a slogan of Samsung says, "we can do the impossible so that you can do everything possible".

From digital natives to digital citizens

«Digital natives do not exist except as a chronological category - says Rivoltella -. The distance between the generations is rather a cultural gap, which must be faced with wisdom and foresight, focusing on educators' formation, insofar as it is about preparing generations for the future, not remaining anchored in the past ».

For Rivoltella it is, therefore, more correct to think and operate in terms of "digital citizens", focusing on appropriate media literacy courses: what skills to transmit for the new generations to be wise in the use of personal media? how to discern? how to form the ability to look critically? how to enable correct access and how to be creative in the media and with the media?

All this by referring to an "educational framework" that brings in dialogue: time, space, relationships, contents. «Digital education - concludes Rivoltella - is based on: self-regulation, alternation, and accompaniment. Self-regulation, insofar as it is not about protecting from risks, but rather about providing the tools to be able to choose in a balanced way; alternation because the logic is not that of aut-aut, but that of etet ...; not that of substitution but that of alternation, the need for a secure and authoritative adult mediation to set up a balanced "diet" of media; accompaniment that calls into play the adult since it takes time, patience, ability to read phenomena, willingness to support growing together ".

In the debate that followed, Prof. Rivoltella insisted that "education to the media is the posture of the educator who thus becomes an edu-communicator". Hence the need to review the curricula of initial training, those who are involved in training courses to become professionals in education. It is urgent to provide edu-communicative skills to be there in the contemporary world. A provocation that challenges all the educating communities since they are daily committed to "cultivating the talent to educate".
