We Are Family! Every house, a school of life and of love

Rome (Italy). On the afternoon of December 27, 2016, the Rector Major of the Salesians, Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, presented at the Generalate of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), the message of Strenna 2017 “We Are Family! Every house, a school of life and of love”.

The event was introduced to all those present by the greeting of Sr. Maria Luisa Miranda, Councilor for the Salesian Family, who using the notes of the song, ‘Father, Teacher, and Friend’ expressed the joy of being together with the 10th successor of Don Bosco.

Mother General, M. Yvonne Reungoat, welcomed the Rector Major, Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, who was accompanied by the Councilor for Social Communication, Fr. Filiberto González and the Secretary, Horacio Lopez.  She joyfully acknowledged the participation of the various members  and groups of the Salesian Family of the whole world who came to listen to the presentation of the Strenna addressed to them in a special way.  Among those present was the family that had shared the emotional experience of being protagonists in the video of the Strenna.

The presentation of the Rector Major was preceded by the video of the Strenna.  Fr. Ángel retraces the contents of the message that develop in filigree, the most significant ecclesial and Salesian themes on the topic of the family. The families are the center of attention in the most diverse contexts in which we are present, and he explicitly invites everyone to an attentive reading of the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris laetitia of Pope Francis.

Among the reflections, there is attention to the family experience of the Founders on which is based the family style proper to the Salesian charism.  “We were born in the bosom of a family with its beauty and its limitations; a vital space where we learn the art of life and of love.  A family made up of people who love each other, dialog, and share; where affection is experienced and intimacy is enjoyed; and where we learn to ask permission, to live forgiveness, and to thank.  The Rector Major explicitly declares that as Salesian Family with the 31 groups that comprise it, we are the first recipients of this message by right of our identity.  The family climate is, in fact, one of the constitutive elements of our being and of our acting in the family and with the families.  It is a common responsibility that puts us in synergy with the magisterium of Pope Francis and with the universal Church”.

In conclusion, the Rector Major speaks of the family of Nazareth which, in its progressive journey of faith, was not exempt from difficulties and risks.  It is precisely this experience that made it close to families of all times.  It was, in fact, a family that ‘humanized the Son of God’ and this confers an exceptionally sacred value on the family.  The Family is a complex reality which, however, remains the original structure of society.

Fr. Ángel invites us to ask ourselves what can we do as educators, pastors, and evangelizers.  He suggests concrete steps and proposals from the point of view of educative journeys, among which he emphasizes accompaniment as a priority service and challenge to face together:  how can we accompany the parents, the children?  How can we accompany with our pastoral action, the young who are maturing a project of life that chooses matrimony?  A vocational accompaniment that is translated into a proposal of spirituality and a faith journey.

At the end of the presentation, Mother General thanks the Rector Major for the gift of the Strenna and says, “We FMA feel that we have a precise task in the Salesian Family because, with the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Salesian Cooperators, we are the branches born directly from the heart of our common Father.  Firstborn children have the task of collaborating so that the desires of the parents may be actuated and that of helping the others to actuate them; of being actively involved in the building of unity and of love; of being the source of joy and of the full realization of the family project…Along this line, I promise in the name of the whole Institute, the commitment of each of us to actualize the Strenna in our community and pastoral journey, in the accompaniment of the young and of their families, in giving a family flavor to our living and working together”.

The encounter ended with the song to Mary.  We confide in Her to bring to fulfillment the mission of the Salesian Family entrusted to us in the Church, in society in favor of the family today.
