Genoa: Solidarity of the People to the FMA Community on Sardegna Street

Genoa: Solidarity of the People to the FMA Community on Sardegna Street The provincial superior, Sr. Celestina, is in contact with the directress of Genoa and gives us news on the situation of the community on Sardegna street.

There’s a great deal of solidarity. The sisters are surprised by the number of people who are constantly making themselves available to clean and help. Many parents, students, former students and volunteers (who are not even known to the community) have presented themselves at the sisters’ door asking if help is needed and indeed there’s work for everyone.

Sr. Stefania told us that at the height of the flood at Ferregiano, shortly before one o'clock, it was dismissal time in the school and therefore there were many parents and children in the reception area and outside. The location of the house, however, is exactly the path of the flood which was sent out to Genoa from Ferregiano street and at the corner of the house it branched into two. We can only imagine the strength of the impact. At the sight of the flash flood, the Civil Defense asked the sisters not to close their gate to let fleeing people find shelter in the house. So it happened --- open gate, water and mud everywhere, a meter-high of water in the yard, and on the ground floor which is below the level of the street. The students were all taken on the upper floors, as well as parents and all who were present at that time.

It was a scary day which was only partially resolved when at 7:30 PM, the Civil Defense allowed everyone to return to their homes. All but seven employees, who were unable to take the train, remained with the sisters for the night.

Then, yesterday morning (5 novembre) people started coming offering help to the sisters ... and the answer: yes, there is need, but come with the shovel because here we only have one! So the work began, strenuous and continuous cleaning of the ground floor ... paid only by a plate of pasta for all volunteers.

There is so much solidarity from the communities of the province who constantly called up for news and to assure solidarity and prayer. Mother Yvonne immediately tried to get in touched with Sr. Celestina who was then out of the country; Sr. Emilia Musatti also called up; sisters from around the world expressed their solidarity through prayer; and also many Salesians sent their messages directly to the community or through the province. Cardinal Bagnasco visited the community of Genoa; Cardinal Bertone called up to express his nearness as well as the Rector Major who is right now in Mexico.

We can say 'thank you' to everyone and ask for constant concern, not only for us, but for many areas which at this moment are left devastated by the storm. Concern and solidarity must be sustained for the moment and even a few weeks from now when sensibility might run low.
