November 25: Say no to violence

November 25: Say no to violence Alongside the celebration held on March 8 there is another date that has the woman as its protagonist and that is November 25. This date is less well known than the other but no less important. It represents the world day for the elimination of violence against women.
In 1999 the general assembly of the UN proclaimed the international day for the elimination of violence against women. It is important to dedicate a day to this topic because it is estimated that one woman in three in the world is a victim of violence, whether sexual, physical or of other forms.
However, if the day was formally proclaimed by the UN in 1999, the celebration of this day was already taking place since the beginning of the eighties. The supporters of the rights of the woman celebrated the day for the elimination of violence informally on November 25, anniversary of the brutal assassination of the three Mirabal sisters at the hands of the dictator of the Dominican Republic, Rafael Trujillo.
In 1991 the campaign “Say no to violence” started with 16 days of activism against violence in general. The campaign began on November 25 and ended on December 10, the international day for human rights. Everyone, individuals and groups throughout the world, were invited to act to put an end to all forms of violence against women and children.
The Pope also spoke on the theme of violence against women last week in Benin, Africa: «There are still too many practices that humiliate and degrade women in the name of ancestral traditions. With the fathers of the Synod, I invite the disciples of Christ to combat every act of violence against women, to denounce it and condemn it». He added that «progress has been made in the advancement and education of the woman in certain African countries. In spite of this, in the overall picture, her dignity and her rights as well as her essential contribution to the family and society are still not fully recognised or appreciated».
It is up to everyone to promote the rights of the woman every day, because there can be no democracy or peace where man and woman do not enjoy equal rights.
