World Day of Migrants and Refugees

World Day of Migrants and Refugees

The migrant family is the theme of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2007. With this theme Pope Benedict XVI wants to highlight the commitment of the Church not just help the individual migrant, but the family, which is the place and resource of the culture of life and a factor in the integration of values.
The Message reminds us that «There are many difficulties facing the migrant family. Distance between its members and lack of reunification often cause the breakdown of the original bonds. New relationships are established and new affections born; often one forgets the past and ones duties, which are severely tested by distance and solitude. If the immigrant family is not assured a real possibility of integration and participation, it is difficult to foresee a harmonious development for it». We are reminded of this by the International Convention for the protection of the rights of all migrant workers and their families, which came into force on July 1st 2003. This is intended to protect migrant men and women workers and the members of their respective families. For this reason, the Church encourages the ratification of this international legal instrument aimed at defending the rights of migrants, refugees and their families.

«Much work is already being done – the message continues – for the integration of immigrant families, even if there is still a lot to be done. There are real difficulties connected with some “defence mechanisms” of first generation immigrants, which risk becoming an impediment to the development of the young people of the second generation. For this reason it is necessary to plan legislative, juridical and social interventions to facilitate this integration».
Particular attention is given, in the message, to those families of refugees whose conditions seem even worse than before. The possibility of rejoining their family unit is not always guaranteed and, therefore, besides fear, poverty and having left one’s country and home, there is the risk of loosing oneself as a person.

At the end of his message, the Pope expresses the hope that the World Day of Migrants and Refugees will be a useful opportunity for raising awareness in ecclesial communities and public opinion regarding the needs and problems as well as the positive potential of migrant families.
