Subiaco: FMA Snowed in at San Biagio Are Out of Danger

Subiaco: FMA Snowed in at San Biagio Are Out of Danger The wave of Siberian ice that has brought the entire peninsula from north to south to its knees has created grave problems for the whole Italian region. The cities, although unprepared for these extreme climatic phenomena, are able to manage the situation. However, in the small centers, especially those on mountains, the situation is much more serious. Power outages and impassable country roads, have isolated tens of thousands of people who remained blocked in their houses without water, electricity, or heat.

This is the situation with the FMA at the House of Prayer of San Biagio at Subiaco, near the top of Mount Taleo . Sr. Monica Angulo, the Animator of the house of prayer, told us on her cell phone that the meteorological situation has stabilized but they still do not have electricity. Nine Salesian Sisters live at the house on the mountain. Six of them transferred to the city yesterday. “We are in three right now but we have all that is necessary. The Civil Service was finally able to reach the house with their motor sleds and brought us some bread and milk and a gas heater. The worst moment was three days ago when we were without electricity or drinking water. We were completely isolated without being able to count on the arrival of assistance because the roads were blocked by fallen trees. We were very worried about one of the sisters who had health problems and needed medicine . Fortunately, she is now in Rome .”

Notwithstanding the difficulties, the Sisters were able to face the emergency with courage and without losing heart. They melted snow in the fire place and were able to have some water for drinking, cooking, and filling hot water bottles as they waited for help, which finally arrived.

“We are immensely grateful for all the helpers, from the Town volunteers, to the Forest Rangers, to the Civil Service Workers. We know that the emergency is everywhere and we are aware of the tremendous work that they are called upon to do in these days. Thus, we are truly grateful that they came to help us.”

Now that the Sisters are in three and the weather seems to be calmer, they are out of danger. Thanks to the help of the volunteers, they were able to clean the water well, and the road that leads to Sacro Speco (the Monastery of St. Benedict) is now passable.

The House of Prayer and Welcome of the FMA is a simple place where peace and silence reign and where the days are imbued with prayer and the celebration of the Word of God. It is a place where young people, couples, adults all have the possibility of spending the weekend or weekdays in meditation and prayer and where the style of life is characterized by simplicity. It is light years away from the logic of consumerism and the culture of the superfluous typical of our society. It is a style of life in harmony with creation where the new generations are educated for a future that is more sustainable.
