Encounter SYM Italy 2013 is in Full Swing

Turin (Italy). 1200 young people and about 100 accompaniers arrived in Turin, Valdocco to participate in the ‘Salesian Youth Movement Encounter 2013’. This is an experiential event of faith, reflection, sharing, and joy directed to the young people coming from all the FMA and SDB Provinces of Italy and Lithuania. The theme of the days is, ‘Witnesses of Joy’.

The second day of the Encounter, August 11, began with great joy in the courtyard of Valdocco and with a moment of prayer led by Fr. Fausto Fisoli, the SDB Regional Superior of Italy and the Middle East. The prayer included some protagonists from each FMA and SDB Province. The backdrop was the Word of God from the Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians, “Be joyful in the Lord”, the theme of the Lectio Divina held by Fr. Fabio Attard, after which followed a moment of reflection. The courtyard resounded with silence, a silence rich in faith and in content.

The afternoon of the same day was characterized by the Eucharistic Celebration presided over by the SDB Provincial of Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta and Lithuania, Fr. Stefano Martoglio.

The morning of August 12 was spent visiting the city of Turin in its historical, artistic, and religious aspects, which enriched the Encounter 2013 participants with a new dose of culture and holiness. At 1:00 PM, the 1200 young people gave life to a very vivacious flash mob: a run to form the three letters ‘Y S M’ and the hymn of the Encounter danced and mimed together. It was a beautiful sight in the plaza that in Turin is the stage of the most important events! In the cornice formed by the Madam Palace, the Royal Palace, and the Church of St. Lawrence, the participants colored the city and made it resound with notes of joy, just as Don Bosco would have wanted.

The central point of the afternoon of August 12 was the Eucharistic Celebration presided by the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Turin, Msgr. Guido Fiandino, representing the Archbishop. The Bishop spoke to the young in words of friendship and depth as he commented on the Gospel of the day, confessing that had he met the Salesians when he was young, he too would have entered in their Congregation!

The evening continued with a Prayer Vigil and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Ending the day was the Good Night of Sr. Anna Razionale, President of the Italian FMA Inter-Provincial Conference. She reiterated the words of Pope Francis on joy. Also present in the Basilica were Sr. Maria del Carmen Canales, General Councillor for Youth Pastoral, Sr. Giuseppina Barbanti, President of the Italian Center of Salesian Feminine Works, and the Provincials of Piedmont: Emilia-Liguria-Toscana-Rome.
