XXVI Salesian International Youth Games

XXVI Salesian International Youth Games

Turin (Italy). From April 29 to May 4, the XXVI Salesian International Youth Games will take place.  This is organized by the Salesian International Youth Sports (PGSI). This year for the first time, the international Games will take place in Turin. In addition to hosting the central events of the Bicentennial Year of Don Bosco’s birth, it is also the European Sports Capital.

“The International Youth Games are a great experience of games, sports, and sharing in Salesian Style,” affirms Gianni Gallo, President of SYM in Italy.  “They unite athletes from all of Europe who frequent Salesian schools, oratories, and parishes.  Its organization in Turin is an added value, considering the important religious events that are happening this year like the Exhibition of the Shroud and the bicentennial of Don Bosco’s birth; and sports, since it is the sports capital of Europe.  In their free time, the young people and their families can visit a city that is in continual movement.  The objectives of the Games are obviously participation and sports and cultural sharing.  In this regard, activities have been planned in addition to the competitions to create a positive and educational climate.”

There will be 1200 athletes participating from 11 Nations: Italy, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, and Ukraine.  They will gather at the PGS Sports Village in the Grand Plaza of Turin.
Present at this event are Sr. Runita Galve Borja, Counsellor for the Youth Pastoral Department of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians; Sr. Elide Degiovanni, Provincial of Mary Help of Christians Province (IPI); and national, regional, and local FMA representatives of SYM.

The idea was born in 1988, the centenary of Don Bosco’s death.  Along the years, the International Games have touched various cities in all of Europe.  The first event with the present format was held in Malta in 1990 in which 714 athletes participated from Austria, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Malta, Poland, Egypt, Lebanon, and Yugoslavia.  Italy has hosted it six times: Genoa in 1992; Catania 1996; Piedmont – Alba, Asti, Biella, Fossano, Novara, Rivoli, and Sommaria Bosco in 1998; Catania in 2002; Rimini in 2004; and Lignano Sabbiadoro in 2009.
Now in its 26th year, it continues to be a great sports and sharing experience in Salesian style that unites the athletes of all of Europe who frequent the works of the Salesians and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.  In addition to healthy sports competitions, it offers the young participants the opportunity for cultural, educational, and spiritual growth, to exhort them to build through sports, a new world based on Christian humanism, personality development, and respect for values.

The competitions will begin on April 30th and will start with basketball, volleyball, soccer, soccer in 5, and table tennis.  In the evening, a grand feast is planned with the official opening ceremony of the tournaments.  On the afternoon of May 2nd, at the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, the Eucharist will be celebrated for all the sports delegations present.  On Sunday, May 3rd there will be the finals in the various tournaments followed by the awards for the winners and the concluding ceremony.
Gianni Malagò, the President of the Italian National Olympics Committee (CONI) has also given his applause for the initiative, praising it as “the action followed by those who decline the word ‘sports’, not only in an a competitive sense, but as a means to develop formative, cultural, and social dimensions in a Christian vision.
