How did it all start?

Awareness of the reality of communication has been alive in the FMA Institute right from the beginning. Don Bosco and Mary Domenica Mazzarello were great communicators. They made the works and communities they founded real systems of communication giving this sense to the Salesian educational system and to its spirituality. The Sector for social communications was set up in 1990, during the XIX General Chapter, in the context of cultural change. It came into being to respond to some fundametal questions:
  • How do we deal with today’s culture in our information society?
  • How do we marry today’s culture with the values and understanding of the origins?
  • How do we effect a quality leap in line with the Church and history?
  • How can we evaluate the relevance of communication on our identity of female educators of the young?

Beginning from General Chapter  XIX (1990), which created the Sector for Social Communications, the Institute started a process of the reformulation of its communications policies that oriented all projects along the lines of these objectives:  

  1. To move from a vision of means to a cultural concept of communications.
  2. To assume communications as a focus and educational practice that is transversal to the mission in the implementation of the charism.
  3. To favor an institutional communication based on a networking mentality to influence decisions in favor of life and of those whom society excludes.
  4. To dialogue with the contemporary world, especially the young people, to contribute to the creation of a new culture of solidarity toward active citizenship.
  5. To move from  one direction of information to a reciprocal quality communication so that all may have voice.  
  6. To implement technological mediation through the educational use of the new technologies.

The line of Educommunication was chosen by General Chapter XXI to be the focus, practice and educational transversal for the mission and implementation of the Preventive System.
