Together in Faith
towards the fullness of Life

Community reflection and sharing

YESTERDAY: Seeds of Faith sown in the your soul
- Zealous preaching of the Christ love by word, example and even martyrdom.
- The preparation of sacraments touching one’s life and community.
- The preaching of ‘missions’ in the parishes especially in Lent and Advent that revived even the dormant seeds of faith.
- Sodalities and associations in parishes and schools and boarding that kept the faith alive and active from the tender age.
- Tireless zeal of the missionaries that cared for the whole person, ( body, soul, health, education, work etc) with a human touch, as the Pope Francis says, “to protect with tenderness… let us not be afraid of goodness or even tenderness”.

Challenges that we encounter in living our faith in the COMMUNITY and in the MISSION

- Today as our centres open their doors to the world, we are called to courageously withstand the world, the flesh and the devil with their enticements, “to be in the world but not of the world” (Jesus)
“Let not the world enter the convent” (MM)

- To be witness of God’s love and messengers of Christ’s mercy to every person (especially the poor, the under privileged, and even sinners…)
“ When we do not witness to Jesus Christ, we witness to the worldliness of the devil (Pope Francis quoting Leon Bloy, 14 March 2013).

- To start afresh from Christ, imbued with the spirituality of the Cross of Christ, for
“ when we walk without the cross, when we build without the cross, when we profess a Christ without the cross … we aren’t disciples of the Lord, we are worldly…”(Pope Francis 14 March 2011)

- To cultivate an authentically, human and spiritual sensitivity to counteract the materialistic bombardment of the media.

- Strong impact of materialism – insensitivity towards spiritual values.
- Degenerated family conditions
- Negative effect of media in the families and the peer group instinct in the young
- Scares and irrelevant religious instructions in schools and parishes.

New ways of Evangelization
1) An active and creative presence among the young, moving out of our comfort zones and reaching where THEY ARE
2) Evangelizing them in their own language ( media language, youth language)
3) Renew and reinvigorate family apostolate.
4) Make a personal and community concerted efforts to find new and effective ways of spreading the Good News: print, music, personal contact…

World Feast Gratitude Day -2013
Preparation for the world Gratitude day – Auxilium Aspirantate - Barasat (INC)
I. Seed of Faith sown in your soil yesterday
• We recall with deep gratitude the seed of faith that was sown in our land by St. Thomas the Apostle and handed over to us by our ancestors.
* In the family we were able to breath an environment rich in prayer, faith, and sacramental life, enriched by the spiritual and ascetical readings from the saints and holy men and women.
# In the family the liturgical celebrations of the year were lived with great preparations, both interior and exterior, and that created in us no other desire than to love God and our neighbour.
* Everyday our grandparents and parents instilled into our little hearts devotions connected to that particular month, liturgical celebrations and popular piety.
* Daily recital of the Rosary, bible readings, chanting and singing of sacred hymns led the children to draw closer to Jesus and his Mother.
# In this ambient saturated with human and christian values the vocations to priestly and religious life flourished.
* It was a joy and glory to dedicate oneself totally to the service of God and His Kingdom near and far.

II. Challenges you encountered in living the faith in the community and the mission today
* over burdened with multiple responsibilities and activities
* inability to face situations, persons and events in the light of the Word of God which is read, meditated, prayed and shared daily
* lack of stamina to withstand the ever new demands of consecrated life
* routine way of approaching the sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation and fulfilling the practices of piety, thus not allowing ourselves to be transformed into other Christ
* Dichotomy between prayer and life.
# deep rooted multi-religious faith becomes a barrier and threat to our existence as authentic christians
# levelling of faith considering all religions as equal prevents the effects of direct proclamation of Christ
# though the recipients of our mission come from all walks of religious background and faith and are grateful to the educational facilities offered to them, none of them opt to be a follower of Christ
Iii. New ways for an evangelisation tomorrow
* Allow Jesus to enter into our life and walk with us along the paths of our daily life
* Promote a quality of relationship in the community that enhances mutual trust and growth
* Live the Word of God even in the midst of difficulties, problems, sufferings, misunderstanding
* Use innovative methods to proclaim Christ and his message to our recipients who belong to other faiths.

1. Seed of faith sown in your soil yesterday : Ans- Conquest of India

                                          on 26 th April 2013
The theme “Re-discover, cultivate, bear witness and celebrate the gift of faith that the minds and hearts of many may be opened to true life.” found way to review the history of our community, province, beginning and the growth of Salesian  Charism in our motherland India. Summing up the discussion and sharing in the community, we arrived at the following points though non- conclusive in itself.
 1. Seed of Faith sown in our soil yesterday:
By the six valiant and zealous missionaries pioneers of 1922 were nurtured by their selfless dedication, countless sacrifices, and limitless privations, concealed in utter poverty and in effusive joy. They called their nothingness holy poverty.
The six pioneers Sr. Teresa Balestra, Sr. Maria Angeleri, Sr. Caterina Marnetto, Sr.Luigina Appiano, Sr. Consiglia Tarricone and Sr.Teresa Merlo set sail from Turin, reached the gateway of India on 18 November 1922 and later set foot at Thanjavur-Tamil Nadu on 22 November.
During the course of time they continued to toil under the guidance of our Blessed Mother, without counting the cost, and the  seed of faith brought forth  tiny flowers  of  other new lives  in Jesus Christ – A magnificent work  in our Land by the Lord who used simple , humble  and unknown  FMA women to do marvels in His name.
Years passed the flowers multiplied within the first five years; three new foundations;  many were the women and men, young girls and children, sick and poor who were given a new hope of human dignity bestowed with pastoral love.
Convent schools, orphanages, dispensaries, etc were the new planes and valleys of soil in which the seed of faith continue to fall through the incomprehensible ways of divine providence and the continuous assistance of Mother Mary as felt by the sisters.
Others came in, joined the jolly group, His work continued.... The countless flowers were blossomed in the heart of Mother land as the years of the abundance of graces flowed in through the furrows of the gradually formed six provinces of India. Our hearts now sing out in Joy a hymn of gratitude to God, Our Bl. Mother, and our Holy Founders for the marvels done since that tiny seed of faith planted in our soil by our holy pioneers.
2. Challenges you encounter in living the faith in the community and the mission today

  1. Building genuine relationships within the community - of sisterly understanding and

                                                                                             Openness to one another

  1. Intense love for Jesus which prompts to love all in Him
  2. Heroic missionary spirit, optimistic and sacrificing spirit of dedication
  3. Building a  witnessing community as it can evangelize  even without words
  4. Bringing the reign of God in our hearts  and in the hearts of all whom we encounter daily
  5. Deep rooted cultural differences are blocks to transmit Christian faith
  6. Insufficient United effort and unity of spirit to contribute synergy of mind and body to spread the Kingdom of God through our educative mission
  7.  Lack of Authenticity in self surrender to God and a strong faith that God can use our little contribution to do great things for Him.

3. New ways for an evangelization tomorrow

  1. Communication of Faith in a language that is understandable to men and women of today.
  2. Building Gospel style of relationships in the families, religious communities and with the world around so that cemented by the family spirit, a new form of living and relating together can bring God’s Kingdom of love and peace
  3. A witnessing community can become a catalyst in bringing real transformation in the society.
  4. Jesus way of acting: Spirit of   gentleness to welcome diversity

Simplicity of the poor to know how to share
Awreness of the needs of others to be of help to them

  1. Use Jesus’s methods:

Eg: Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, comfort the afflicted etc

  1.  Preach  by real, substantial actions the Good News to the poor
  2. Bring the Good News to the poor
  3. Do Good News to the poor
  4. Evangelize self before evangelizing the others if at all
  5. Dare to do the Right as per Gospel, the world will fall before the Lord.
  6. A strong personal faith in what great things Jesus can do for the growth of His Kingdom with the contribution of my ‘littleness’.
  7. The conviction that Evangelization is the work of the Holy Spirit and we must do our best to cooperate with Him in the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.

New ways of Evangelization
Christ did not come to establish a new religion, and much less, a new set of religious practices, rituals or prayers. He was very much part of the Jewish society and religion of the times and observed all their essential requirements and practices, but not uncritically. He also took pain to emphasize the fact that all traditions and customs, laws and rules, however sacrosanct they may be, are subservient to the human person and no one and nothing should be allowed to trample upon human dignity. He insisted time and again that Kingdom values are beyond the boundaries erected by religions and other man  made structures.
What Jesus came to establish was a new way of living and relating to one another based on love, justice, equality, sharing and caring that transcend all barriers of race, creed, colour or economic status. It is this aspect of the message of Christ that caught the imagination of early believers and drove them in hordes to listen to the apostles and be baptised. The establishment of the first ‘commune’ was a visible manifestation of this social transformation that the gospel was effecting in society.

As we prepare ourselves for the Feast of Gratitude we are happy to share our reflections on the Seed of Faith sown in our soil yesterday, the challenges we encounter in living the faith in the community and the mission today and new ways for an evangelization tomorrow.
As a community we reflected and shared our reflection. A summary of it is given below.

The seed of Faith was sown in our soil first and foremost by the Apostle St. Thomas. He brought Faith to the southern part of India, preached, taught and made disciples from the upper class Brahmins of the Indian society. He established the church on strong foundations and this paved the way for many to accept the Good News of Christ. He suffered martyrdom in the hands of non believers in Christ. But the church continued to grow spreading its roots deep in the Indian soil.

Later on, missionaries like St. Francis Xavier and others preached fearlessly and the Church began to grow in a wider manner. Evangelization was their main concern. All aimed at this one task of evangelizing the people to become good persons for God and Society. Irrespective of cultural differences, the missionaries set out audaciously to preaching and baptizing. Nothing prevented them from sowing the seed of faith. Many of them were martyred. The Missionaries gave integral formation through instruction in faith and also through formal and non formal education. They trained Catechists to preach and teach in the rural villages and helped the villagers to keep alive their faith despite problems and difficulties.

The Salesian Charism was brought to Indian soil by our missionaries. They set out to visit villages, bearing the brunt of weather, language and diverse cultures besides the geographical hurdles. They learnt the language of the people and evangelized them through simple catechesis. In the meantime, they opened oratories, work rooms, dispensaries and schools to provide education. They accompanied girls who showed signs of religious vocation and invited them to join their rank. The sisters worked with one mind and heart with the sole intention to educate and evangelize.

The challenges we face in our mission of evangelization and education are many. Poverty, illiteracy and exploitation of women and young children are a few. Single parented homes, broken families, lack of medical facilities and poor hygienic environment threaten in some areas. Empowerment of women and rehabilitation of the victims of alcoholism are two serious challenges we face in our context. In social sector there is an erosion of values in family, there is lack of fidelity and waywardness. There is inequality and misery. Wavering faith, sense of religion is on the decline. Impact of media has also to be addressed discerningly.

We live in a tea garden area. There is an urgent need for new evangelization. The faith of the people needs to be strengthened through family prayer, well prepared Catechesis and Sacramental life. Scripture based family visits, personal meeting with women and children, preparing women leaders and empowering them to be economically self reliant, strengthening women’s associations and groups in the parishes, formal and non formal education are some of the ways for evangelization.

Community reflection and sharing
Seeds of Faith sown in our land ( Yesterday)
 Dedicated and zealous work of our early missionaries taking care of body and soul, catechizing , educating the children and adults with much love and care like Jesus.

 During the season of Advent and Lent the special care in following the families, and preparing them with great attention for the reception of the Sacraments, searching for the lost one and looking for new ones to embrace the Faith.

 The different associations in the parishes helped the people to strengthen their faith.

Challenges we encounter in living the Faith in the community and mission (Today)
• To be forgiving and be ambassadors of God’s mercy
• To be witnesses of God’s love by word and deed to everyone.
• To come out of ourselves and share with others the precious gift of Faith we possess.
o Broken families
o Families too much care for material things and less interest for spiritual matters.
o Media which do not give the right value.
o Poor and superficial religious instructions in the parishes and schools and no proper follow up
New ways of Evangelization
 To bring the joy of the Gospel to the people we encounter in our day to day life as Jesus
did in his days through Peter, Mathew, Zacheus, in our education field with little
children, boarders, teachers, parents etc.
 To help the people to Jesus more, to love Him more deeply and follow Him closely with
our witnessing life of joy, love and goodness.
 Visit the catholic families and encourage them in their journey of Faith, strengthening
The family prayer.
 Non Christians, make them understand that they can find in Jesus the answer to their
questions and problems in life.

Nirmala Niketan -  Jaigaon
As we join the FMA communities of the world to greet our Mother General we are happy to add our mite to the questions posed for reflection and action
The seeds of faith sown in our land yesterday: We in India take pride to believe that the seed of faith was directly sown in our land by the disciple of Jesus St.Thomas. The descendants of a  group of Christians who were weaned out from the then Hindu society are still existing and contribute to the spread of the Kingdom. A good number of Priests and religious who work in the missions belong to this category.
The Indians Catholics are proud to recall with gratitude great missionaries like St. Francis Xavier, John De Britto ,  Gonzales Garcia  who proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus and spent their lives in His service.
As religious of the Salesian family we can recall with gratitude the Salesians and the FMAS who came from over seas and worked zealously  for the spread of the Kingdom of God in the hearts of the young and not so young of the areas where we work now
The challenges that we encounter to live the faith in community : The first generation of missionaries who left their homeland and worked tirelessly have gone for their eternal reward. Now we come from different social, cultural and religious background. There is a lot of good will, hard work and sacrifice in the hearts and minds there are also weak spots  like  shallow faith, weak convictions, seeking personal convenience and easy living that hinder true witnessing to the Gospel of Jesus. The fear of Mother Mazzarello that” the world that we left outside will creep inside” has become a reality. We need to become more Christ like: open minded, simple, kind and gentle in our dealings with each other.
Challenges we encounter in the mission: We live in a multi cultural, multi religious and fast changing society. The values that Indians held precious are no more considered important by the young generation of present day. The family set up is completely different and many broken and divided homes are a sorry sight of the day. The young people do not have much confidence in the words and actions of the adult generation and they seek answers to their problems not in religion but in modern technologies. In some areas religious fundamentalism and fanatic beliefs create obstacles to proclaim Jesus. The colonialism that India underwent under Christians countries is also a hindrance for educated people to believe in what we preach. There are also people steeped in superstition that they dare not change their convictions.
The new ways of evangelization: We feel that we should proclaim Jesus directly and our life of witness should always be a guarantee for it’s veracity. We could also make use of the modern technologies available so that the message can be passed on with more clarity and ease.
W e pray that the reflections help each one of us to be authentic followers of Jesus and the people who have not known of Jesus read the book of our lives and become convinced of the Truth we proclaim.

In preparation for the World Gratitude Day.
After having shared and discussed the theme for the World Gratitude Day. We have the following points to share:-
1. * Seeds of Faith sown in our soil Yesterday-
In our soil the beginnings were of hard toil. Our first missionaries had an ardent desire – rather a passion for souls. They were filled with God and their only desire was to give God to souls and souls to God. To save souls was their one aim to travel as far as India. They sowed seeds of faith in the face of hardships, trials, difficulties of every kind. They were humble servants in the Lord’s vineyard sowing seeds through, catechism, family visits, direct evangelization, baptizing people, and adapting themselves to the climate culture and language of the people. Their witness of life, joy and enthusiasm was the first and fertile soil where the seed of faith grew. Their genuine love for God and neighbour attracted souls to God. Their sacrifice in travelling roads on bullock carts, crossing rivers and mountains on foot was really a fertile soil to grow the seed of faith.
2. * Challenges we encounter in living the faith TODAY in the Community and the mission.
There are many Challenges in today’s globalized and digital world.
Weakening of our faith due to shallow prayer life. Living in the world we sometimes become; of the world ‘the world attracts and so detachment is at stake. Word of God is a challenge and to find meaning in it is not easy. The daily realities events and persons are not seen in the light of faith.
In the mission we are not able to give motive for our faith in world relativism, indifference, consumerism modern technologies and counter witness. There is multi religious set up of strong fanaticism, the presence of different denominations of Christians, which disables faith. The means of Communication in a highly globalized world challenges our faith. There is also the presence of generational difference where misunderstanding grows. Socio- political discrimination curtails freedom and spontaneity of the young people. Superstitious beliefs and social evils suppress the common people’s openness to faith. The young people are attracted to the modern means or Communication and Media.

3. * New Way for and evangelization TOMORROW.

Like Jesus – share the good news with conviction and authority.
Assume the call of the Church to New Evangelization by encountering Jesus, cultivating a deep knowledge of Him, through a well qualified preparation from, biblical, theological and Catechetical point of view.
We should have a strong conviction that Mission is Now mission is ME – To rethink the method and spirituality of the preventive System to bring young people to faith, to re-evangelize Christians;
To have an active pastoral plan and to carry it out.
Involved young and lay people in carrying out our mission.
Give orientation to the religious persons in the field of New Evangelization update and be relevant for today’s youth, make use of the new media, technology. The B.G.C groups have a tremendous power to proclaim through a life of Christian witness.
We must let ourselves be evangelized by the Risen Lord; (as Mother general says and our C.C XXII says.) allowing him to speak to our heart until it burns with passion for God’s kingdom in the way our Founders left to us as heritage Let Mary, the star of the new Evangelization guide us on our faith journey.

# Seed was sown in 0ur soil By St, Thomas the Apostle, Portuguese S.J. missionaries and Belgian S.J. missionaries Fr. Lievens , Salesians of Don Bosco, F.M.As. and other Institutions through:-
*Direct evangelization, *Education, *Social Ministry , *Mass catechetical instruction,*frequent family and village visits, *meaningful and joyful celebration of the liturgy and sacraments, *Witnessing Faith in life and dedicated service of the devoted parents, catechists, priests and religious etc .

CHALLENGES we encounter in living the Faith:
In COMMUNITY-# Marked diversity in origin, culture, language among the community members # incoherent spirit of faith and life, # constant purification of intentions in our choice for God, # Making Jesus the centre of our life, # assimilation of the Word of God shared together, # Dichotomy in the prayer life and daily life , # to withstand the power of the world and be moulded by the Spirit of the Word of God, # become one in mind and soul ,# generous and constant, pooling of personal resources in the community, # and accepting the persons and events in the spirit of Faith.

In the MISSION- # Shallow faith life, # Weakened Home Catechesis, # Tug of war between Faith and Modernity and materialism,# Broken families and increase in the number of no bodies child, # Shattered Faith,# Conception of Jesus only as an idol and not as the living person ,# Mad rush in search of wealth, health , happiness a, peace and joy and missing the very source of all these: JESUS,# Loss of the sense of Sin and Morality, # Multi -religious, Multi-cultural and Multi- lingual society,# Discrimination of all kinds of the female(women and girl child) ,# Society surrounded by many social evils like superstion illiteracy etc.,# Poverty and migration to urban areas,# threat of displacement of people without any security of life , # Threat of political giants and religious fundamentalists, # lack of value for transcendent and life eternal because of the concept of Karma, # presence of only a Small Christian minority compared to the vast majority of other religions, etc. …

New Ways of Evangelization Tomorrow:
# Responsible for auto formation and sacramental life. # Know and live authentically the preventive System and charism of the Institute, # cultivate a compassionate heart, # innovative in Education # Direct Catechesis, Sunday catechism class, and other Educational centres , # reading and study of Bible, Regular family visits and follow up, # SCC to be promoted more , # encouraging the family prayers , Build Bible friends through media, # Re-Evangelize the faithful, # Celebrating life and Faith in various groups and associations, Empowerment of women , and health care for children and youth. # more involvement of laity, # work, pray and nurture for many good and Holy Vocations in the church.
